I moved around a lot as a child with many terms attached to how we lived such as ‘latchkey kid’ and ‘at risk’ due to circumstantial situations. My sister and I used to dream about what we wanted to be when we grew up, planning our future with both giggles and serious claims of where our endeavors would take us. Looking back, we never felt that we couldn’t be any of those ideal *titles* or wouldn’t be able to attain the adventurous explorations that we were sure we would one day master. I grew up hearing that I was a dreamer & saw the world through rose colored glasses, that one day, ‘the real world’ would disappoint me.
My dreams? I wanted to be a teacher, a photo journalist, an explorer of foreign lands. I wanted to experience different cultures’ colors, food, languages and beautiful people. As a teenager, I wanted to be a chef, a writer, travel and that one day I would give birth to one child while adopting others. I was told that everything would cost more money then I would ever have and to lower my expectations, stop the grand dreaming because I’ll only be disappointed. I wanted to make a difference in the world. Never knowing in what capacity, just a knowing that it shall be.
As an adult, my wishes were manifested! I gave birth to a beautiful son named after my grandfather, traveled to Haiti and adopted 2 other butterflies. I co-created & taught a children’s co-op with nurturing mamas, then started my own in-home daycare to continue the enriching wonderment of rearing curious kiddos, created a health focused support group for women, fed my passion for travel & cooking by putting together a circle of like minded explorers that celebrated the authentic culture of other countries, joined an African-Brazilian drum ensemble to feed my beating heart’s yearning for rhythm.
What am I doing now? I have filled my home with a nuanced sense of design, purpose and creativity through experiential living. I am seasoned and sassy. I have manifested everything that my soul yearned for, listened to those whispers and nudged the insecurities out of the door to allow the dream making magic happen. I have become a writer. Sassafras Elements, at the core, is where I can continue to connect and gather with community. It is where I reunite with Dawn Renée, reclaiming and honoring her rose-colored glasses’ vision of the world and share who I’ve become through my personal explorations in life. We are on a journey together, in a book of adventurous trials and tribulations that keep each day worth living, by seeing beauty amidst chaos.
Who I am
- I thrive on ideas ~ my own and also those envisioned by others.
- My religion? Possibilitarian, I believe in the power of positive thinking.
- I view the world through rose colored glasses, noticing cracks in an object or person as an opportunity to explore and discover the beauty of those fissures.
- I witness innocence, curiosity & love foremost in others.
- I am one villager in a vast community of villages who learns and teaches with an open heart to co-create a unique tapestry of comfort to share together.
ethnic food. the scent of gardenias, jasmine & roses. garam masala, cardamom & cumin. driftwood. rock. coral. steel. brick. chipped paint. quiet moments of stillness. smiles from the young & old. puppy breath and bird songs. the sparkle of wonderment in a child’s eyes. the luminosity of the moon and the twinkle of guiding stars. magic = the quick electric connection of ‘knowing’ that something is infinitely bigger than I am while listening to the wind blow through the trees. the warmth of a hand clasping my own, the chills of serendipity.
I’m a passionate mother who takes pride in finding solutions, paying attention to details and creating a beautiful home for my family, as well as for myself.
I nourish our nest with my senses, listening to the whispers of my soul and continuously strive to create harmonious balance in our lives.
I pursue the avenues that feed my spirit and one of those passions is embracing community. I believe in the power of positive intention that creates enrichment for our village. My mission? I yearn to assist others on their quest to living wholly, through the practice of paying attention to what makes our hearts smile.
The result? A closer feeling to the rhythmic flow of abundance that I have manifested within my own life, to see beauty amidst chaos…come in, my door is open!
